SH Bookshelf: Green Pages

Homeowners interested in making their houses more eco-friendly can turn to a growing number of books for help and advice. Here are two that caught our eye. Green Remodeling, by Boulder, Colo.-based green consultants David Johnston and Kim Master, is a comprehensive guide to residential greenbuilding. Johnston, who says he wrote the book because he could find nothing else like it on the shelves, begins by describing his own home remodeling project (his office) and from there launches into descriptions of everything from roofing, plumbing, structural framing and insulation to water heating and solar energy, all from a green angle. New Society Publishers; $29.95 In Good Green Homes, author Jennifer Roberts sets out to demonstrate that green design doesn't have to be ugly design, focusing on aesthetics as well as informed decision-making. Aimed at homeowners as well as home renters, the book explains how even small actions can result in healthier and more efficient homes, and discusses such issues as right-sized living, indoor air quality and quality construction. Gibbs Smith; $39.95
