Beguiling Tiling

More than likely you wouldn't think of attaching a recycled glass bottle to the wall of your bathroom or the counter of your kitchen - unless it was in the form of a glass tile. Oceanside Glasstile, based in Carlsbad, Calif., turns recycled glass bottles and raw sand into small luxury glass tiles that are ideal for use on curved wall surfaces, as well as for counters and floors.

The tiles are available in eight product lines, including hand-cut Tessera glass mosaic tiles, metallic and translucent Casa California tiles, Haiku decorative glass tiles and skid-resistant Minerali flooring tiles. Although the tiles are made of up to 85 percent recycled glass, they install just like any other tile, and can be used to create artful designs and mosaics.

Oceanside says it uses 1,000 tons of recycled glass each year to make its tiles. The recycled glass is cleaned and crushed, and the resulting substance becomes the raw material for producing the glass tiles, which are available in 300 showrooms in the U.S., Canada and worldwide.
