Roofs That Reflect

A relatively simple way to reduce your cooling bills this summer is to brush a reflective coating onto your roof. An uncoated roof can absorb up to 83 percent of the sun's heat, while a coated roof can reflect up to 85 percent of the sun's heat and reduce energy consumption of air-conditioning systems. Plus, a coating can extend the life of your roof by reducing sun damage.

The Henry Co. of Huntington Park, Calif., offers a variety of reflective roof coatings, including SolarFlex 287 SF, a white water-based coating that reflects up to 80 percent of the sun's heat and is formulated to resist mildew in humid climates. Aluminum, elastomeric (rubber-like), rubber-based and acrylic coatings are available in black, white and mid-tones, such as gray and tan. The coatings are designed to comply with Energy Star guidelines for energy efficiency.

The reflective coating can be applied with a brush or roller, or sprayed on. Care should be taken to inspect the quality of the roof, make any necessary repairs and clean off dirt, dust and loose materials before application.

As icing on the cake, your purchase and application of a reflective roof coating may qualify for a rebate from your local utility company or a government-sponsored program, or may be tax deductible. For more information: http://www.henry.com or 323-583-5000.
